English doctoral candidate Briona Jones has received an advance contract with the New Press for Mouths of Rain, the companion anthology to Words of Fire: An Anthology of African-American Feminist Thought. Mouths of Rain is an edited collection that accounts for the long history of Black Lesbian intellectual production spanning from the 19th century to the 21st century. As Guy-Sheftall explains in the preface to Words of Fire, not all women included in the text would define themselves as “feminist.” Similarly, not all women included in this particular anthology name themselves “lesbian” either. “Black Lesbian” is a capacious signifier for Black women who have shared intimate, and loving relationships with other women; Black women who see bonding as mutual; Black women who have self-identified as lesbian; Black women who have written about Black Lesbians; and Black women who theorize about and see the word lesbian as a political descriptor that disrupts and critiques capitalism, heterosexism, and heteropatriarchy.
