Smith-Marshall Awards for English Education
The Smith-Marshall Endowment provides scholarships and travel awards for English Education students. Applicants for both the scholarship and travel award must meet the following criteria:
- Commitment to studying and teaching in English language histories, stylistics, grammars, and uses in varied communities and settings (e.g., from professions and disciplines to racial, ethnic, and/or geographic groups, and more).
- An emerging pedagogical capacity to design high-impact student learning experiences related to English language histories, stylistics, grammars, and uses in varied communities and settings.
- Record of strong academic achievement and/or leadership in English education coursework and other relevant communities at MSU.
The Smith-Marshall Scholarship
The Smith-Marshall Scholarship provides $4,000 -$5000 of funding for up to 4 English education students during the 2022-2023 academic year. * Qualified undergraduate applicants must be enrolled in the capstone teaching internship. Qualified graduate student applicants must be doctoral candidates and making satisfactory progress toward the graduate degree. All applicants must meet the following criteria:

Up to 1000-word statement outlining candidate’s commitment to and knowledge of English language histories, stylistics, grammars, and uses in varied communities and settings.
- Evidence of emerging pedagogical capacity to design student learning experiences related to English language histories, stylistics, grammars, and/or uses in varied communities and settings. Evidence may include sample lesson or unit plans with reflection, student work samples from your teaching, or micro-teaching demonstration with reflection.
- The names of two faculty references who can speak to the nominee’s fittingness for the award criteria. Full letters not required.
- Updated resume.

The Smith-Marshall Travel Award
The Smith-Marshall Travel Award provides up to $1000 in funding for 5 English Education students to travel to the 2023 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual convention to present their work and build connections. * Both undergraduate and graduate students in English Education can apply for this award.
Submission materials:

Up to 1000-word statement requesting conference support, including:

- A rationale for request
- An explanation of your interest in attending the conference rationale for request

Title of paper or poster and abstract

Proposed budget
- Proof of acceptance to the 2023 National Council of Teachers of English annual convention.
- The name of one faculty mentor who is familiar with the conference and your presentation. Full letters not required.
